In August 2004, Lorin Miller became the third director of the Placer Pops Chorale (formerly the Sierra Community Chorus) in its 20-year history. He has come to the Chorale with a distinguished background as a solo performer and choral director, and in addition to his work with the Chorale, he continues his affiliation with several other fine arts organizations. For the past 25 years, Lorin has enjoyed performing nationally, and internationally in Asia and Europe, in a variety of styles ranging from Bach to Broadway. Lorin, a Northern California native, grew up in Grass Valley where the rich choral history of the region first nurtured his love of the choral genre. A vocal performance major in college, he toured with a solo album before moving to Los Angeles to attend UCLA for film scoring. After working in Hollywood television production for more than a decade, Lorin made the transition back into the music arena. He is currently director and co-founder of “A Gift of the Heart,” a musical non-profit arts organization that promotes and develops talent within the greater Sacramento region for the purposes of providing quality musical productions benefiting local charities. Additionally, he is musical director for Auburn Grace Community Church, on teaching staff at Forest Lake Christian School in Auburn, and founding director of the Forest Lake Christian School Youth Chorus. Lorin is a frequent soloist throughout Northern California. Performances include the Haydn Mass, Harmoniemesse, Mass No. 12 in B-Flat major and Symphony No. 2, Op 52, Lobgesang, by Mendelssohn, with the Sacramento Choral Society at both the Sacramento Community Center and Mondavi Center. He toured Europe as a soloist with the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, performing in European cities such as Vienna, Munich, Prague, and Budapest. In the Fall of 2009, Lorin both directed and soloed in “A Gift of the Heart” production entitled “A Life Unmasked” which toured Slovenia and Italy. This Broadway review featured excerpts from “Les Misérables,” “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Phantom of the Opera.” His additional solo work has included J.S. Bach’s Magnificat and Bach’s Cantate #106 - Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit with the CSUS University Chorus and excepts from Lerner and Loewe’s “Brigadoon” with the Sacramento Choral Society. In May 2003, he traveled to New York’s Carnegie Hall to perform Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Lorin has performed with Spirit West Coast, a summer music festival in Monterey, California, that draws 40,000 people each year to its outdoor venue. He has also been a finalist in San Francisco’s prestigious Harmony Sweepstakes, an annual a cappella contest featuring groups from across the United States.
